6B Camp – Visit to sacred indigenous sites

During our visit to the East Gippsland Mitchell River National Park we hiked out to visit sacred indigenous sites in the area located next to Woolshed Creek which flows into the Mitchell River.

The girls were taken to the Den of Nargun – where the ‘Nargun’ lives according to Gunai/Kurnai tribal legends, a fierce half-human half-stone creature. The boys visited Deadcock Den (named after dead roosters).

At these sites we learned about indigenous connection to land. On return we have read indigenous poetry and literature to help us understand how the connection goes beyond physical elements and is fundamental to indigenous peoples identity. We understand that when indigenous people talk and write about country it is spoken of like a person.

In our posts we have drawn on figurative language to express our experience visiting these sacred sites.
